Carmen Infinity Scarf pattern

I made this lovely scarf in the ‘Post and Shells’ stitch, I love the look of the stitch and wanted to use it so make something useful. An infinity scarf is perfect, so simple to make and really nice to wear when it gets a bit chilly.

Yarn: I have used Rowan cotton cashmere which beautifully soft. It’s a blend of 85% cotton, 15% cashmere. It’s a DK weight yarn and the gorgeous shade is called Pearly Pink.

The approx. length of the skein is 125m/137 yards;  I used x3 50g balls.

Size: the length of my scarf when the two ends are stitched together to make the ‘infinity’ style of scarf is about 26 inches the width is 7 inches.

If you use a different yarn for this pattern you may need to use a different quantity of yarn, or you may want to make a longer, looser style of scarf and so will need a bit more yarn.

I used a 4.5mm hook.

(The yarn label recommended a 4mm but I preferred the drape that a 4.5mm created.)

Stitches and used with abbreviations  – UK terms:

dc – double crochet  (this is a US single crochet)

tr -treble crochet  (this is a US double crochet)

Fptr  – front post treble (this is a US front post double crochet)

sk = skip

st(s) = stitch(es)

ch = chain

Start:

First make a foundation dc row of 39.

Or if you prefer, chain 40, then dc in the 2nd chain from your hook and then dc in every stitch along the chain.

Note: the method that you use to start off will affect how you join your two ends of the scarf together to make the ‘infinity’ style scarf. So you may want to skip ahead to the ‘To join the scarf’ section below so you can decide how you would like to do this.

Row 1

3 ch, (counts as 1st tr here and throughout) 1 tr in each stitch to the end. Turn (39 sts)

Row 2

3 ch, 1 tr in first st, *sk 2 sts, 5tr in the next st, (this makes a shell) sk 2 sts, Fptr in next stitch**

Repeat from * to ** 4 more times, sk 2 sts, 5 tr in next st, sk 2 sts, 1 tr in next st, 1 tr in the 3 ch from the row below.

You will have x 6 shells, x 5 Fptrs, and 2 trs at each end of the row.

Turn

Row 3

3 ch, 1 tr in the first st, *sk 2 sts, **5tr in next st, (this will be the centre tr of the shell from the row below) sk 2 sts, 1 Fptr in the next st (around the Fptr from the row below)**

Repeat from * to ** 4 more times, sk 2 sts, 5 tr in next st, sk 2 sts, 1 tr in the next st, 1 tr in the 3 ch from the row below. Turn. (6 shells, 5 Fptr, and 2 tr at each end)

Repeat this row 3 until you have the length of scarf you want, bearing in mind that the scarf will be joined at the two short sides to make an infinity scarf. When it’s worn you twist it over once so check how the scarf will fit as you go so that you achieve the right length.  For my scarf I did 105 rows of the shell pattern which made a 47 inch long scarf before joining.

Next row

3 ch, 1 tr in each st to the end. Turn (39 sts)

Next row

1 ch, (does not count as a st) 1 dc in each across. (39 sts)

To join the scarf:

DSCN4199scarf3

Fold the scarf  in half and line up the two short ends.

a) if you started with a dc foundation row:  slip stitch in the back loop of the side closest to you and in the front loop of the side furthest from you. This will make a flat join.

b) if you started off making a foundation chain then made a row of double crochet sts you’ll  need to join slightly differently as there won’t be front and back loops on the foundation chain side of the scarf. So instead you can either slip stitch evenly along the two sides or you can join the sides using dc stitches.  If you go for the dc joining method it will create a ridge along the join.

Fasten off and weave in your ends

You’re all done!

Put it on, twist it over and go and show off your lovely new handmade accessory!

If you make one, please tag me on Instagram @poppyseedandpom so I can admire your scarf, I’d love to see it!

I have also made the scarf with x5  50g balls of Debbie Bliss Rialto DK which is a merino wool yarn. This created a longer scarf which is really soft and cosy 🙂
